Unique Woodworking

Vermont Headboard

Designed to meet the desires of my clients, this headboard stands in the center of their bedroom allowing them to enjoy their panoramic view from bed. The side opposite the bed incorporates ample shelving. The painted trees from floor to ceiling on either side define the space, adding something strikingly surreal–both organic and whimsical. (Painted box elder trees, yellow birch slabs, poplar dowels, and one-inch plywood).

Live edge shelf detail. The two shelves and the ‘backsplash’ are successive slabs out of the same yellow birch tree. I like the incremental progression you can see in their contours and the sweep of the darker heartwood. The clients agreed to have me use dowels as the vertical supports to keep the piece visually lighter and to interfere as little as possible with the beautiful sweep of the slab shelves.
